Camogie: U14s played Oran in Rockfield in the second round of the u14 camogie league, Tuesday 17th May. The girls started the game very well and spent long periods deep in the Oran half but just couldn’t take the scores they deserved and some great goalkeeping by the Oran net minder. They finally took the lead halfway through the first half through a very well struck point from play from the busy Niamh Fitzgerald. Oran equalized through a pointed free shortly afterwards and the first half finished with the girls camped deep in the Oran half which was finally rewarded through a goal from a ground shot by the hard working Ina Van Opstal. The half time lead was 1-1 to 0-1. The second half was a very entertaining affair which ebbed and flowed throughout. St Dominic’s scored first through a well taken point from play from the stylish Anna Campbell before Oran scored a goal from distance. The game was in the balance at this point until a rejuvenated Evelyn Kilcline took the game by the scruff of the neck and scored an excellent individual goal through a two-handed hand pass to the net after her own hard work created the opportunity. Shortly afterwards Ava Sweeney completed the scoring through an excellently taken point from play from distance on the left wing. This was a highly entertaining game between two teams that have improved throughout the season. There were top performances throughout the pitch but special mention must go to Ali Campbell in her first start at centre back, Niamh Cuttle, Kate O’Brien, Ina Van Opstal and Evelyn Kilcline who worked their socks off and linked play very well when on the pitch and Niamh Fitzgerald, Anna Campbell, Chloe Mc Donnell, Ellen Cafferkey and Laoise Mahon who gave us presence and athleticism in the middle third of the pitch. The game ended on a final score of 2-3 to 1-1. Team: 1. Ellen Cafferkey, 2. Katie Lohan, 3. Tara Murphy, 4. Laoise Mahon, 5.Ali Campbell, 6. Natasha Keenan, 7. Chloe Mc Donnell, 8. Anna Campbell, 9. Ina Van Opstal, 10. Niamh Fitzgerald, 11. Niamh Cuttle, 12. Davina Touhey, 13. Kate O Brien, 14. Evelyn Kilcline, 15. Ava Sweeney, 16. Katie Hennessy, 17. Ciara Roddy, 18. Ciara Martin, 19. Leona Harney, 20. Hannah Dempsey. U10s played in the first county blitz of the season on Friday 13th May in Oran. Tulsk, Four Roads, Oran 1, Oran 2, Roscommon Gaels 1, Roscommon Gaels 2, St. Dominic’s 1 and St. Dominic’s 2 participated on a lovely evening for Camogie. Each team played three games on the night. These games were very competitive throughout with the tight pitches ensuring that every ball was keenly contested for. Our girls played very well and showed us that they are developing nicely as a team. It was some our girls first games at the U10 level and they stepped up to the standard very well on the night. Their ground strokes were a credit to their U8 coaches last season and they will have no trouble in progressing to the next level of playing camogie from the hand. Our older girls, for their part, showed great leadership in the games and we took some excellent scores throughout. A special thank you to the Oran club for a very enjoyable evening of Camogie and of course the refreshments afterwards which were appreciated by the girls. Each team had three 12 minute games. All girls displayed huge commitment, hard work and lots of skill. If the rate of development and improvement continues the future will be very bright for the club. Special thanks to all the parents for bringing the girls and to the mentors Noel, Paula and John. Training will continue on Wednesday evenings at 6pm on the main pitch.
